Americans Not Loving Trump’s Economic Agenda So Far, Poll Shows

Americans are sourcing President Donald Trump’s economy within 100 days of his second term, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Trump has focused on implementing his aggressive economic and trade agenda in the early weeks of his second stint at the White House, shaking markets seeking to deploy massive tariffs for almost every country in the world and sort global commerce. Americans may not particularly like Trump’s economic agenda so far, but his overall approval rate is currently at around 42%, according to Reuters. The survey is based on responses from 4,306 American adults between April 16th and April 21st. The poll error is about 2% points.

Of all respondents, 87% indicated they were worried about inflation, 86% were concerned about the cost of living, 76% were concerned about the possibility of a recession, and two-thirds were concerned about the stock market.

Additionally, 52% of respondents agreed to the idea that “Trump’s actions could make it difficult to live comfortably at retirement,” but according to the survey, only 31% of respondents disagreed.

After years of inflation and aggressive restrictions from the Biden administration, Trump’s promise to bring the American economy back to strength was one of his major selling points on the 2024 campaign trail.

Republicans appear to be sticking to Trump despite recent economic turmoil, with 81% of Republican respondents saying they approve Trump’s economic agenda. In comparison, 5% of Democrats have approved his economic policy, and 28% of respondents who are not affiliated with either mainstream party.

As part of Trump’s efforts to restructure the global trading system, he and his administration have struck China with a major 145% tariff on imports from China. But Trump said on Tuesday that China’s tariffs are likely to drop significantly in the near future.
