Amityville school nurse moved to a different position after reportedly wearing 'ICE' jacket on 'Superhero Day,' upsetting parents.

Nurse Reassigned After Controversial Jacket Incident at Long Island School

A nurse at Northwest Elementary School in Amityville was reassigned after wearing a jacket emblazoned with the letters “ice” during “Superhero Day.” This reportedly upset both parents and school officials.

The district is conducting an investigation into the incident, which occurred on Wednesday. They acknowledged that some members of the school community found the acronym worn by staff to be inappropriate in an educational context.

In a statement, the Amityville Union Free School District explained that after becoming aware of the situation, they promptly reassigned the employee pending a thorough review. They emphasized their commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all students and families.

While the district didn’t specify what the acronym represented, Nakia Wolf, president of the Amityville Teachers Association, confirmed it was indeed “ice.” He stated the nurse was present at a moving-up ceremony for kindergartners, but declined to reveal her name.

Wolf criticized the nurse’s choice, stating it had no place in a school setting. He questioned why someone would use a learning environment to make a political statement, describing the behavior as “totally inappropriate.”

Teacher Hilda Brown noted that some staff had worn similar jackets for the event. Parents expressed their outrage after hearing about the nurses’ attire, with one parent, Marquis Gordon, labeling it “absolutely disgusting.”

Jackie Saurus added that such actions only stoke fear, reflecting broader concerns in the community.

Meanwhile, tensions across the United States have intensified due to recent anti-ICE protests, drawing significant attention. In New York City, police recently arrested 86 individuals during a particularly violent protest in Lower Manhattan.

On Long Island, immigration enforcement activity has notably increased, with ICE agents reported in Glen Cove and other areas. Local officials and community members are on alert as protests continue to emerge in response to ongoing enforcement actions throughout the region.
