Guilty Plea from Woman in Coffee-Throwing Incident
A 49-year-old woman was recently seen in a court where she pleaded guilty after being caught on video tossing a cup of coffee at a McDonald’s worker in Michigan last November.
Kashara T. Brown stood before Judge Elian E.H. Fichtner in Saginaw County, alongside her attorney, Paul M. Purcell. She faced a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery, which could lead to a maximum of 93 days in jail and a fine of $500.
On November 4, at the McDonald’s located on Dixie Highway in Buena Vista Township, Brown was attempting to reclaim a refund for two sandwiches she ordered online, as reported by Detective Russ Persen of the Buena Vista Township Police.
To de-escalate the situation, the manager offered her coffee, but Brown insisted that she had been waiting for over an hour. As the interaction dragged on, when she turned away from the counter, the manager wished her a “nice day.”
In response, she removed the lid from the coffee cup and hurled the hot beverage at the manager, shouting, “You bastard, drink this fucking hot coffee!” A witness indicated they heard the manager yell as the coffee struck him.
A video of the incident circulated online prior to her turning herself in to law enforcement.
Following the incident, Brown was arraigned and released on a personal recognizance bond. Authorities also filed paperwork seeking felony assault charges against her.
Fortunately, the manager only sustained minor burns, as he had been wearing enough layers to avoid serious injury.
Last Monday, Judge Fichtner directed Brown to meet with the Probation Department for an assessment, which will inform her sentencing. The judge emphasized the importance of not missing this appointment, noting that it would not be rescheduled.
Before concluding the hearing, Brown’s attorney requested to modify her bond conditions, allowing her to return to Georgia, where she had been visiting family at the time of the incident. However, her bail conditions had prevented her from leaving Michigan since the event occurred.
Brown has since been unable to attend a court date regarding a separate traffic violation in Tennessee due to these travel restrictions. Judge Fichtner agreed to adjust her bond, but reminded her that she must return to Michigan and be present in court when her sentencing is scheduled or face an arrest warrant.
Brown assured the court of her return, although the date for her sentencing remains undecided.
