California Mushroom Poisoning Cases Rise

Tragically, another person has passed away after consuming a type of poisonous mushroom that has recently appeared in California, raising the state’s death toll to four, as reported by health officials.

The latest victim was a man from Contra Costa County who died on Tuesday after ingesting toxic death cap mushrooms.

Since mid-November, there has been an “unprecedented” wave of poisonings, affecting at least 39 people across the state, according to the California Department of Public Health.

Interestingly, three of these victims required liver transplants.

The dangerous mushroom, Amanita muscaria, often resembles the common edible button mushroom but can be deadly. Dr. Craig Smolin, Medical Director of the San Francisco Division of the California Poison Control System, cautioned, “One bite of a mushroom can cause serious toxicity.”

This situation is particularly alarming for a state that usually sees fewer than five such poisonings in a year. Officials are strongly advising against consuming wild mushrooms, stating: “Only safe mushrooms should be eaten; these come from grocery stores or markets.”

The symptoms of death cap poisoning can be deceptive. Victims commonly experience severe vomiting and diarrhea within six to 24 hours of ingestion. Surprisingly, they might feel better for a day or two afterward. Unfortunately, even when patients believe they are recovering, toxins continue to harm the liver, sometimes leading to fatal consequences.

A common misconception is that cooking, boiling, or freezing can eliminate the poison, but this simply isn’t true.

Hospitalization due to death cap mushroom poisoning has been reported in several counties, including Alameda, Contra Costa, Monterey, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Sacramento, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Sonoma.
