Tragic Car Accident in Nigeria Involving Anthony Joshua
The identities of the two individuals who lost their lives in a car crash with British heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua in Nigeria on Monday have been revealed.
Joshua’s friends, Sheena Gami and Latif Ayodele, were confirmed deceased in the incident, according to a statement from Matchroom Boxing, the promotion company representing Joshua.
Matchroom Boxing reported, “Anthony Joshua was involved in a car accident in Lagos, Nigeria earlier today. It is with deep sadness that we confirm the tragic passing of two close friends and team members, Sheena Shami and Latif Ayodele.”
The statement added, “Joshua was injured in the accident and has been taken to hospital for evaluation and treatment. He is stable and will remain under observation.”
They expressed condolences, stating, “Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the families and friends of all those affected, and we ask that their privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time.”
The Nigerian Federal Road Safety Corps indicated that the car Joshua was in, though he was not driving, lost control while trying to overtake, labeling this a “serious traffic offense.”
Just ten days earlier, Joshua had fought Jake Paul in Miami, earning a knockout victory in the sixth round, a match that garnered significant attention as it was streamed on Netflix.
The fight reportedly netted Joshua around $92 million.
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shared a message on social media, stating, “I spoke with AJ and offered my personal condolences on the recent deaths of two of his close aides, Kevin Latif Ayodele and Shina Gami. I wished him a full and speedy recovery, and we prayed together. AJ assured me that he is receiving the best treatment.”
He also mentioned his conversation with Joshua’s mother, who expressed gratitude for the outreach. “Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was with us at the hospital, assured us that he would do everything in his power to ensure that AJ received the best possible treatment,” said Tinubu.
“May God strengthen our families and give rest to the souls of those who have died,” he concluded.
