Ocasio-Cortez Urges Caution for Networks on Trump’s Upcoming Speech

On Tuesday, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) expressed her belief that television networks have a “responsibility” to avoid airing President Trump’s forthcoming address if it lacks factual basis.

“I don’t think we should support the spread of falsehoods regarding our election,” she remarked to a reporter while at Capitol Hill.

Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the need for media outlets to evaluate Trump’s statements carefully before making the decision to broadcast his speech. She noted, “It’s crucial that news organizations assess the content they receive. We have an ethical duty not to air material that lacks evidence and could potentially undermine the election.”

She continued, “Of course, this really depends on what he actually says.”

Earlier that day, Trump confirmed his address, scheduled for Thursday evening, would touch on topics including “free and fair elections.” He mentioned, “This is a significant moment for us, and our country really needs to address this.”

“Without free and fair elections, there can be no nation,” he added, indicating there would be more to discuss during the speech. “We’ll also talk about other important issues, but this will be a major announcement.”

It remains uncertain whether the White House has requested that major networks air the president’s address.

Trump’s previous address to the nation occurred on April 1, when he spoke about the situation in Iran.

Before that, he delivered a prime-time speech last December, highlighting his achievements since returning to the White House.

In the upcoming speech, Trump is expected to reference findings from a government review to argue about weaknesses in the election system. He might also elaborate on claims concerning China accessing U.S. voter data and potential links to Venezuela, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Trump has consistently claimed that the 2020 presidential election was “rigged” against him.

The White House has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this matter.
