AOC raises funds for Mary Peltola, a moderate Democrat supported by the NRA

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, known for her leftist views, is channeling her impressive fundraising capabilities to back moderate Democrats who support gun rights and training.

In a recent email, the Queens Democratic Socialists reached out to supporters asking if they would consider splitting a $5 donation between Mary Peltola’s campaign for the Senate and their Progressive Movement.

They described Peltola as a candidate committed to systemic change, aiming to reduce grocery prices and increase affordable housing for Alaskans.

Interestingly, what the Socialist Party representatives didn’t highlight was Peltola’s stated campaign priorities, which include “fish, family, freedom.” This positions her as the only Democrat endorsed by the NRA for the upcoming election in 2024.

Peltola, 52, captured Alaska’s House seat by defeating Sarah Palin in a special election back in 2022 but later lost her reelection bid to Republican Nick Begich in 2024.

Throughout her time in office, she took pride in advocating for Arctic drilling and supported the approval of the $8 billion Willow project by ConocoPhillips.

Her 2024 candidacy was significantly bolstered by contributions from oil companies; Chevron and ConocoPhillips’ super PACs reportedly invested over $310,000 in her campaign and advertisements. Despite AOC’s claims that both she and Peltola rely solely on individual donations, it raises questions about the influence of corporate funding.

This endorsement marks a shift for Ocasio-Cortez, who has previously supported candidates more aligned with her progressive values, such as fellow “Squad” members Jamal Bowman and Ilhan Omar.

Political analysts speculate that this might hint at a strategy for a possible Senate run in 2028.

Peltola’s candidacy is seen as advantageous for the National Democratic Party in its efforts to regain control of the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections.

Having already won a statewide campaign, she is considered a formidable contender.

According to Ronna Atkeson, a political scientist, Ocasio-Cortez seems to favor party unity over strict ideology, which might indicate her own potential shift toward a more moderate stance.

She expressed a desire to lead in a style reminiscent of Nancy Pelosi, weighing the question of which candidate is more likely to win in these circumstances.

Atkeson believes that this move to support Peltola may suggest Ocasio-Cortez is eyeing a role in the Senate rather than the Presidency.

To succeed in the Senate race, Ocasio-Cortez will need to attract moderate Democrats across New York, who might find Peltola to be a compelling candidate.

Current Senator Chuck Schumer raised less than $500,000 last year, giving him far less funding compared to Ocasio-Cortez’s impressive $20 million haul.

There’s considerable speculation that Schumer, who is 78, might not seek re-election when his term concludes in 2028, partly due to financial limitations.

Concerns about Schumer’s leadership style have been voiced within the Democratic Party, suggesting that someone like Ocasio-Cortez could be interested in his position.

“She needs allies within the party, and supporting Peltola could be beneficial for her in creating those connections,” said Hans Noel, a government professor at Georgetown.

Peltola is competing against incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, who is running for re-election. Recent polls indicate a tight race, with Peltola currently holding a slight 2-point lead over Sullivan.
