Ocasio-Cortez Endorses El-Sayed in Key Senate Primary
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, known for her progressive stance, has chosen to endorse Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s competitive Democratic Senate primary, marking a significant clash between the far left and the party’s establishment.
On Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez backed El-Sayed to succeed retiring Sen. Gary Peters, a move that could lead to him becoming the first Muslim senator if he wins the election. He has garnered support from prominent figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders but faces centrist contenders, notably Rep. Haley Stevens, who is backed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Schumer and other establishment members seem to believe Stevens has a better chance of winning against Republicans in what is perceived as a crucial election for the Democratic party’s Senate majority.
Ocasio-Cortez, often labeled as AOC, voiced her thoughts on this tense primary, saying, “Despite our ideological differences, we see this moment as existential.” She expressed hope that the party can unite for the chance to win, believing El-Sayed embodies that possibility.
Her endorsement could energize progressive activists already in El-Sayed’s corner, which raises concerns for establishment leaders. They worry that, should El-Sayed become the nominee, it would push the party further left in a state that has shifted politically under Trump’s influence.
Since the announcement, El-Sayed has reinforced some of his more controversial positions, including staunch support for Medicare for All and criticisms of U.S. policy regarding Israel, calling the actions in Gaza “genocide.” He’s also against accepting donations from PACs, reinforcing his grassroots approach.
The Democratic primary in Michigan is set for August 4, and El-Sayed’s recent endorsement seems to reflect a growing trend of far-left candidates achieving success in primaries across the country.
El-Sayed has been a prominent campaigner for progressive causes and previously served as a significant supporter for Sanders in the 2020 presidential run. Polls currently suggest he is leading the race.
Interestingly, this isn’t Ocasio-Cortez’s first endorsement of El-Sayed; she previously supported him during his unsuccessful bid for Michigan governor in 2018. He acknowledged her backing as an affirmation of the campaign’s goals.
The Democratic nominee will ultimately face former Rep. Mike Rogers, likely the Republican candidate, in the general election. The Michigan Senate race has been deemed highly competitive, with both parties eyeing it closely for potential shifts in control.
On the other hand, the Michigan Republican Party reacted to Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement, branding it as predictable and framing the election as a battle between her ideals and what they characterize as pragmatic values for Michigan families. The back-and-forth, it’s clear, highlights the deep divides and tensions within the current political landscape.
