"Are You Seriously That Unaware?" John James Calls Out Al Sharpton After Claiming His State Lacks Black Congressmen

John James Challenges Al Sharpton on Black Identity

On Thursday, Republican Rep. John James from Michigan criticized Pastor Al Sharpton, claiming that for the first time in decades, there was no representation of black voices in Michigan. This came in response to comments Sharpton made on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” James asserted that he would not be dismissed simply because his views did not align with Sharpton’s “biased” perspective on what black individuals should believe. He invited Sharpton to engage in a conversation about the impact of democratic policies on black families and communities.

“AL, are you really that blind? I exist, regardless of your opinion. I fought for the right to define my own identity. You can’t erase me just because I don’t fit your narrow view of what black people should be,” James stated in a video shared on X. He also noted his Republican affiliation, pointing out that while the party isn’t perfect, it aligns more closely with the values his grandmother instilled in him.

Continuing, James emphasized, “For me, politics isn’t a religion. My mission is Michigan, and serving is my purpose. My commitment is to God, my country, and my family. In 2024, more young black men will see President Trump as a serious option for jobs, security, and respect. Your blindness, Pastor, is part of why change seems difficult.”

In his invitation, James challenged Sharpton: “Come to Detroit for a discussion. Let’s explore how families in this area have struggled over the past six decades and how conservative values might improve the situation.”

As for the backdrop, Detroit had the second-highest violent crime rate among major U.S. cities in 2024, according to a security organization.

James, who declared his gubernatorial candidacy in April, is leading the Republican field with 55% support against incumbent Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Previously, he faced off against former Democratic Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters in competitive races.

John James is a veteran of the Iraq War and previously served as president of James Group International. He was an aviation officer for rangers and led Apache platoons in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2007 to 2009.
