Arizona restaurants are making headlines for their decision to offer free meals to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents as well as other federal law enforcement personnel. A notable example is Sammy’s Mexican Grill, which gained attention through social media posts shared by the outlet Pulso.
In a video interview that was translated into English, the restaurant’s owner, Jorge Rivas, stated, “Everyone who works for ICE, every federal employee, can come to Sammy’s Mexican Grill. Here they will be treated with respect and the way they deserve.”
Rivas elaborated in a podcast interview on The Ray Stevens Show that the establishment has long displayed signs welcoming law enforcement and stating that they can dine for free. “When you walk in the door of the restaurant, there’s a sign that says, ‘Welcome to Sammy’s, where law enforcement always eats for free,'” Rivas mentioned. He has been promoting this policy for over five years, believing in the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices made by law enforcement to protect the community, even if it’s from people they may not personally know. After all, during emergencies, people turn to 911, expecting help to arrive swiftly.
Rivas is a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump and has actively participated in state Republican politics. Interestingly, he ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District last year.
However, the restaurant has faced considerable backlash online, including numerous threatening phone calls, negative social media comments, and calls for boycotts. The climate around ICE has been fraught, particularly after a series of incidents involving ICE agents, leading to protests and heightened tensions in the community.
Assaults against ICE have reportedly surged, with some statistics indicating an alarming increase in threats and violent encounters involving law enforcement personnel.
Despite the criticism, Rivas is resolute about supporting law enforcement, particularly ICE officers. He emphasized that they deserve respect and acknowledgment, especially during these unusually tense times.
