“Arizona’s election was free and fair. Arizonans elected President Biden,” Arizona Attorney General Chris Mays, a Democrat, said Wednesday. on video From Phoenix.
“The defendants indicted by the state grand jury are said to have plotted to prevent the lawful transfer of the presidency because they did not want to accept this fact,” she continued. “Regardless of their reasons, any conspiracy to violate the law must be answered, and I was elected to uphold the laws of this state.”
Eighteen Republicans were indicted, but authorities initially released only 11 names because the rest had not yet been notified. The Associated Press and other news organizations identified some of the other defendants based on their descriptions.
A month after the election, 11 Republican officials gathered at the party’s headquarters in Phoenix to sign a certification claiming they were electors to reelect former President Donald Trump to the Oval Office.
“If this plan had been successful, Arizona voters would have been denied the right to have their votes counted for the president of their choice,” Mays continued. “In effect, their right to vote would have been rendered meaningless.
Others indicted in Arizona include former White House aide Boris Epshteyn and former Arizona Republican Party Chairwoman Kelly Ward. Trump is listed as an unindicted co-conspirator.
The charges include felonies such as conspiracy, fraud and forgery.
President Trump’s spokesperson Stephen Chan releases brief statement Criticizes the content of the indictment.

Special Counsel Jack Smith is indicting the former president on criminal charges related to efforts to overturn the election, and Republicans are facing charges from several states, including Georgia, Michigan and Nevada.
“We will not allow American democracy to be undermined,” Mays said in a video Wednesday. “It’s too important.”
