Candlelight Vigil for Lindsey Graham in London
On Sunday, members of the Iranian community in London gathered for a candlelight vigil honoring Senator Lindsey Graham, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 71.
Dozens lit candles outside the U.S. Embassy by the Thames River, creating a makeshift altar adorned with Graham’s photo and Iran’s historical “Lion and Sun” flag, symbolizing resistance against the Iranian regime.
The crowd chanted together, “Rest in Peace, Lindsey Graham,” expressing not just sorrow but a feeling of solidarity.
Details Surrounding Senator Graham’s Death
Graham died at his Washington home on Saturday night, likely due to an aortic dissection. He was known for his strong calls for military action against Iran, frequently meeting with Reza Pahlavi, the son of the last Iranian Shah. He often appeared in public wearing merchandise promoting the idea of “Making Iran Great Again.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recounted a conversation with Graham, saying, “He always encouraged stronger actions against Iran, telling me, ‘Bibi, you have to do it.’” His clarity on the matter was striking.
It’s worth noting how mixed reactions can be in these situations. Graham had his share of supporters but also faced criticism. In fact, Iranian officials celebrated his passing. A state TV anchor stated that it was a moment for celebration, calling Graham a warmonger.
That same night, U.S. forces executed airstrikes targeting Iranian positions around the critical Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM confirmed the operation involved various military assets, marking a significant escalation in tensions.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps responded defiantly, asserting their claim over the Strait and condemning what they termed as foreign interference.
In turbulent times, it’s uncertain how this incident might further affect U.S.-Iran relations. It’s a complex scenario that seems to change almost daily.
