Arkansas public school students to soon receive mandatory gun safety courses

The Arkansas Senate passed the bill last week to provide age-appropriate firearm safety guidance for students, and the Arkansas Department of Education will work with the Arkansas Games and Fish Committee to develop the plan.

Law 229, also known as House Bill 1117, is necessary for public school districts and open-registered public charter schools to provide students with firearm safety guidance.

The bill's sponsor says the idea came from a conversation between neighbors.

“Our kids all play together and break into the house, the play of the day. And in the process, they might go to their neighbor's house and discover their unsecured firearms and how they react,” Rep. Scott Richardson said.

The bill says it will force the Arkansas Games and Fish Commission to work with the primary and secondary education department to create and approve age-appropriate firearm safety courses.

The methods discussed in the bill include, from video to online sources, as well as potential off-campus approved firearm safety courses, along with live-action movements and sporting events.

These are just options currently being discussed, but the bill states that parents must agree if live action training options are approved.

“If off-campus and a committee-approved firearms safety course is offered along with live-action or sporting events, public public schools with off-campus approved firearms safety courses and public schools participating in public school districts or public schools may receive approval from students who have been approved by students who have been admitted to the incoming student invoice.
