Tragic Loss of Two Iowa National Guard Members in Syria Attack

On Monday, it was confirmed that two members of the Iowa National Guard were killed during a recent attack in Syria, thought to involve the Islamic State extremist group. The sergeants, Edgar Brian Torres Tovar, 25, from Des Moines, and William Nathaniel Howard, 29, from Marshalltown, were honored for their service.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds ordered flags across the state to be flown at half-staff, expressing gratitude for their dedication and sorrow for their untimely loss.

According to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, a civilian interpreter working for U.S. forces also lost their life in the incident. In addition, the Iowa National Guard reported that three other troops sustained injuries, with two in stable condition and one listed as good.

This attack has posed a significant challenge to the newly improved relations between the United States and Syria, which have been ongoing since the ousting of dictator Bashar al-Assad last year. The U.S. military is expanding efforts to cooperate with Syrian security forces, with hundreds of U.S. soldiers currently stationed in eastern Syria to combat the Islamic State.

During the incident on Saturday, which occurred near the ancient city of Palmyra, a member of the Syrian security forces was also injured, and the assailant was deceased. This attacker had only recently been redeployed after suspicions concerning his conduct arose.

Nour al-Din al-Din al-Baba, a spokesperson for the Interior Ministry, confirmed that a gunman opened fire at a meeting between U.S. and Syrian officials, causing a “serious breach of security.” However, he noted that Syrian security forces have had more successes than failures since last year’s political shift.

The Army has launched an investigation into the incident, with military officials claiming it was perpetrated by members of the Islamic State.

In response to the attack, President Donald Trump asserted there would be severe repercussions, while Syrian President Ahmed al-Shalah expressed his devastation over the events, reiterating that Syria is aligned with U.S. forces.

Torres-Tovar and Howard were described as deeply committed soldiers and integral members of the Iowa National Guard by Adjutant General Stephen Osborne, who emphasized the focus on supporting their families during this difficult time.

Howard’s Family Reflects on His Military Dreams

William Howard’s stepfather, Jeffrey Bunn, who serves as chief of police for the Meskwaki Nation in Tama, Iowa, shared that Howard had aspired to become a military officer from a young age. Bunn highlighted Howard’s dedication, stating he was always the first to arrive and the last to leave.

Howard was known for his strong faith and commitment to service, inspired by his grandfather’s military background. He had served for over 11 years, aiming for a 20-year career in the military.

In a poignant post on social media, it was shared that Howard wished to ensure his fellow soldiers knew he would always be there to lend support or simply listen.
