Concerns Over Democratic Outreach to AAPI Voters in New Jersey

Officials within the Democratic National Committee (DNC) have expressed concerns that the party isn’t adequately reaching out to voters from the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. This challenge could be critical, particularly for the upcoming gubernatorial election in New Jersey, which has the largest Asian American population in the nation.

Democratic Party Vice Chair Shasti Conrad pointed out that their party has lost support among significant segments of the community. Despite the overall trends, some votes shifted towards Donald Trump, indicating a decline in Democratic support from 2020 to 2024. She remarked, “We need to do more.”

Conrad observed that Republicans have sharpened their efforts to connect with Asian American voters recently. While there has been backlash, including anti-Asian sentiments from some Republican factions, the party has also effectively tapped into economic anxieties and engaged with Asian communities. She noted this increased engagement through community events and spaces.

As 2025 approaches, New Jersey is gearing up for an off-season election, featuring gubernatorial elections only in this state and Virginia, alongside a highly anticipated mayoral race in New York City.

Republicans Targeting New Jersey Governorship

Once a Democratic fortress, New Jersey saw a surprising boost for Trump in the recent elections, sparking Republican hopes to shift the state politically. Historically, the last time New Jersey voted for a Republican presidential candidate was during George H.W. Bush’s 1988 campaign. Data shows Trump reduced his defeat margin from 16 points in 2020 to 6 points in 2024, which has renewed enthusiasm among Republicans.

Democratic Representative Mikie Sherrill is set to face off against Republican Jack Ciatarelli in the gubernatorial election on November 4.

AAPI voters, numbering over 584,000 in New Jersey, represent a vital demographic, particularly for the Democrats aiming to keep the governor’s office. Conrad, who also chairs the Washington State Democratic Party, emphasized that failing to engage with this community could be detrimental to their efforts. She bluntly stated, “There are 1 million Asian Americans in New Jersey,” highlighting a need for more investment from the party.

This demographic is the fastest-growing group in the U.S., and many are concentrated in states crucial for electoral victories. With key population increases observed in Southern states, including North Carolina, Georgia, and Texas, it’s clear the dynamics are shifting.

In domestic voting patterns, 57% of Asian voters backed Kamala Harris in 2024, yet Trump’s support also grew, with one in four Asian votes favoring him. The party leadership recognizes the necessity of directly engaging with AAPI voters, whether at cultural venues like temples or businesses, to understand their concerns.

The AAPI community is diverse, with various cultural backgrounds shaping their collective priorities, which often revolve around economics and immigration, particularly regarding H-1B visas. Conrad pointed out that the Republican Party is actively boosting its outreach, fielding more Asian candidates, which has had an impact on community perceptions and voting behaviors.

Democrats, including Sherrill’s campaign, are now focusing on coalition-building that includes Asian voters. Campaign reps mentioned that Sherrill has actively sought collaboration with local communities to address issues like business support and education funding.

Khemka, a local Democrat aiming for re-election, noted that New Jersey’s political landscape is multifaceted. Different counties often have unique attributes, necessitating a nuanced approach to voter outreach. She emphasized that the AAPI community’s priorities, such as education and immigration, are pivotal for this election’s outcome.

Conrad also mentioned the DNC’s efforts to boost a sense of involvement among AAPI voters. Plans are underway to deepen engagement, especially ahead of the critical New Jersey gubernatorial election set for November 4.

The Republican campaign has been approached for comments regarding their AAPI support but has not yet responded.
