An Asian immigrant is aiming to defeat Democratic Socialist Brooklyn City Councilwoman Alexa Aviles in the June 24 primary election.
Democratic challenger Lin Ye began campaigning in the 38th Congressional District on Sunday. The Southern Brooklyn neighborhood covers Red Hook, Park Slope, Sunset Park, Borough Park, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, and Bath Beach, and has a large Hispanic and Asian immigrant population.
Ye, who immigrated from China when she was 14, previously served as a legislative aide to U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman and describes herself as a pragmatic Democrat who supports public safety and high-quality schools. Explaining.
She has been endorsed by the pro-Israel Solidarity PAC after Aviles abstained from a City Council resolution condemning anti-Jewish hatred in the wake of Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Ye spoke in English and Chinese and had a Spanish interpreter at his campaign rallies.
“As I look around my community, I see families who need more support.
Just like I grew up. People don't feel safe and families are separated
Because housing is not affordable or the streets are not safe,” Ye said.
“New York City's annual budget is over $110 billion. That's not right. If our communities got the funding we deserve, we'd have safe communities, great public schools, a clean environment, and great infrastructure. We need council members who can live up to and truly reflect our needs and values.”
Ye said she has raised more than $24,000 in the week since she launched her campaign committee, qualified for the full amount of public matching funds, and is on pace to run a competitive campaign. .
She grew up in Sunset Park and Dyker Heights, where her mother worked as a garment factory worker and street vendor.
Ye, who is married and has a young daughter, attended Cooper Union School of Engineering.
