Welcome to our coverage of Jurgen Klopp’s valedictory … ah no, it wasn’t meant to be. West Ham United, Rangers and Brighton & Hove Albion’s dreams went up in smoke, too, along with those of some big names in European football: Milan, Benfica, Roma, Marseille, Sporting Lisbon, Villarreal, Ajax. All gone, and yet we’re still left with a mouthwatering denouement: Atalanta v Bayer Leverkusen, one of Europe’s most progressive sides contesting their first-ever European final, versus the newly crowned champions of Germany, a team who this season have forgotten how to lose.

Both are deserving finalists. Atalanta knocked out the new champions of Portugal, Sporting Lisbon, then steamrollered tournament favourites Liverpool. Leverkusen meanwhile performed absurd last-minute unbeaten-run-salvaging wonders again and again and again, against Qarabag, West Ham and Roma. It’s been a blast on both sides of the draw, and there’s no reason why tonight’s Dublin showpiece will be any different. So strap yourself in, grab the popcorn, treat yourself to a large pour, sit back and enjoy. Kick-off is at 8pm BST and we’ll go to extra time and penalties if absolutely necessary. It’s on!

Important Events

Neither team had their strongest starting lineups over the weekend, so let’s not waste time counting the changes. Life is too short. Instead, let’s simply celebrate the star’s name being back in the lineup. For Atalanta, Ademola Lookman, formerly of Charlton, Everton, Fulham and Leicester, returns to supply Gianluca Scamacca with firepower. Young Belgian winger Charles de Ketelaer completes the attacking trio. Regarding the return of Leverkusen, Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka and Josip Stanic, Maciej Kovacs took up his usual position in Europe, although Victor Boniface was the club’s top scorer with 21 goals this season. He moved to the bench and Xabi Alonso took charge of the striker’s play. Careful recovery from groin injury. Not a bad option to throw in later.

Kit and Cavoodle. Atalanta are the designated “home” team tonight, so wear the black and blue stripes. Berat Djimci, who replaces long-lost Rafael Toluj and injured vice-captain Marten de Roon in the captaincy, will be handed a stuffed toy even if the pennant is busy. Leverkusen captain Jonathan Tah will wear his second choice white and red and will wear a neat red and yellow flag in return. Squint and you’ll see it.

Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen have played each other before. The two teams only faced each other in the last 16 of the competition in the 2021-22 season. Atalanta won the first leg 3-2 at home, with Luis Muriel the hero with two goals. The outcome of the second leg in Leverkusen remained uncertain, but Jeremy Boga scored in the last minute to give Atalanta a 1-0 victory and a 4-2 aggregate victory. The Black & Red are favorites to win tonight, but the Black & Blue’s recent record is on their side.

preamble

Welcome to our coverage of Jurgen Klopp’s valedictorian… Oh, no, I didn’t mean that. The dreams of West Ham United, Rangers and Brighton & Hove Albion also vanished, along with some of the biggest names in European football: Milan, Benfica, Roma, Marseille, Sporting Lisbon, Villarreal and Ajax. All that is gone, but there is still a tantalizing ending. Atalanta vs. Bayer Leverkusen is one of the most progressive teams in Europe and will be playing in their first European final. The new champions of Germany are a team that has forgotten how to lose this season.

Both are worthy of being finalists. Atalanta defeated new Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon and defeated Liverpool, the favorites to win the competition. Leverkusen, on the other hand, repeatedly produced incredible performances, with last-minute unbeaten runs against Qarabag, West Ham and Roma. It was a huge success for both teams in the draw and there is no reason why tonight’s showpiece in Dublin will be any different. So buckle up, grab some popcorn, pour yourself a generous helping, reward yourself, sit back, and enjoy. Kick-off is at 8pm BST, with extra time and penalties to be taken if absolutely necessary. It’s on!
