Attacker in 'Trump House' courtroom gives chilling look while victim struggles for survival

A man charged with brutally assaulting a 69-year-old woman in the San Diego area displayed no visible emotions during his first court appearance on Friday. Meanwhile, the victim continues to struggle for her life.

Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, is accused of attempting to kill Kelly Sheron outside her home in Escondido this past Wednesday. Sheron’s husband reported feeling as though there was “no hope” for her recovery after the attack.

In court, Butler remained stoic as he pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder charge.

The elderly woman sustained critical injuries during the Wednesday afternoon incident, and her husband shared concerns over her survival. She is currently receiving life support at Palomar Medical Center.

A family friend mentioned that Butler suffers from “severe PTSD” from his military service and identifies as a Republican, supporting former President Donald Trump.

Law enforcement responded to reports of violence at East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, discovering Sheron in serious condition and a public facility worker restraining Butler.

Details surrounding the assault remain unclear, with police suggesting Butler did not have prior knowledge of Sheron.

Neighbors have expressed complaints regarding Sheron’s display, which features American flags and Trump memorabilia, and they noted it appeared vandalized back in March. However, the motivation behind Butler’s alleged attack is still uncertain.

Those close to Butler’s family indicated he has been struggling with mental health issues while on medication.

After serving in the Navy, friends said Butler became jobless and experienced significant mental health decline.

According to one friend, Butler feels as though he is being pursued, indicating possible severe paranoia.

Police are interviewing witnesses and believe that the act was not motivated by political factors.

Authorities stated they continue to actively pursue the case.

Butler is currently held at the Vista Detention Center facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, which could result in a lifetime prison sentence if he is convicted.
