Barack Obama is the 44th President of the United States, having served from 2009 to 2017. The former president was born in Honolulu on August 4, 1961. His parents, Barack H. Obama Sr. and Stanley Ann Dunham, divorced when Obama was two years old.
Obama’s mother married a man from Indonesia, and he spent much of his childhood there before returning to Honolulu to live with his grandparents.
Obama attended Occidental College in Los Angeles for two years before transferring to Columbia University, where he studied political science and international relations, before going on to Harvard Law School in 1988.

After completing his freshman year of college, he began working at the Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin, where he met his future wife, Michelle. The two married in 1992 and had two children, Malia and Natasha “Sasha.”
Obama’s political career began when he was elected to the Illinois State Senator in 1996. In 2004, he was elected to the United States Senate and delivered a highly anticipated keynote address at the Democratic National Convention.
In 2007, Obama announced his candidacy for the presidential election. He won the Democratic nomination, defeating former Republican Senator John McCain. Obama ran on the slogan “Change you can believe in.”

Obama defeated McCain to become the 44th President of the United States and the first African-American to be elected president. He was inaugurated on January 20, 2009.
After serving four years as president, he ran for a second term and was elected in 2012, defeating former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. After completing his second term, he delivered a farewell address to the nation in Chicago on January 10, 2017.
Obama wrote four novels before, during and after his eight years as president. His first, “I Can Hear From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance,” was published in 1995. He followed it up with “Audacious Hope: A Study of Reclaiming the American Dream” in 2006.
