SNAP Benefits Update Amid Government Shutdown

On a recent Sunday interview with CNN, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent shared that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits might start again as soon as Wednesday. This follows a significant delay in funding due to the ongoing government shutdown, which has now lasted for 29 days, marking a historic second-longest hiatus.

Bessent conveyed that President Trump is concerned about the impact on the approximately 42 million Americans relying on SNAP. He emphasized the importance of navigating the necessary procedures to reinstate these benefits. “There’s a process that has to be followed, so we’ve got to figure out what the process is,” he mentioned, reinforcing Trump’s commitment to restoring access to food assistance.

When pressed by CNN’s Jake Tapper on the possibility of resuming benefits by Wednesday, Bessent hinted, “Could be.” He also added that collaboration from five Democrats could expedite the reopening of the government, which is crucial for reactivating SNAP payments.

Bessent’s remarks came on the heels of a Truth Social post from Trump, where he indicated that federal lawyers question the authority to allocate $6 billion in contingency funds as a temporary solution for the program’s funding gap. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) previously explained that those contingency funds are strictly intended to supplement regular benefits when they fall short but aren’t available for the current fiscal year because appropriations no longer exist.

Two recent court rulings have urged the Trump administration to consider utilizing those contingency funds to support SNAP. Massachusetts Judge Indira Talwani noted in her ruling that the USDA’s interpretation of the funding restrictions is flawed. “They are statutorily mandated to use the previously appropriated SNAP contingency reserve when necessary,” she stated, further suggesting the possibility of offering at least reduced benefits for November.

In reaction to the court’s decision, Trump remarked on Truth Social, expressing frustration over the conflicting legal opinions regarding funding. He voiced a strong desire to ensure that Americans do not face hunger due to the ongoing government standoff. “I do NOT want Americans to go hungry just because the Radical Democrats refuse to do the right thing and REOPEN THE GOVERNMENT,” he insisted, directing his legal team to seek court clarification on how to legally fund SNAP promptly.
