Biden courts Latino voters while fundraising in Arizona

President Biden on Tuesday sought to appeal to Latino voters during a fundraiser in Arizona, outlining comparisons between himself and former President Trump.

“I beat Donald Trump primarily because of you,” Biden said at a campaign event in Phoenix. “I really need you.”

He also pointed to President Trump’s comments regarding Latino immigrants. President Trump recently received backlash for his controversial statements, including saying that immigrants are “contaminating the blood” of the United States and that some illegal immigrants are “not human beings.”

“He only cares about the wealthy,” Biden said of Trump on Tuesday.

The president highlighted Latino members of his administration, including Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona.

The focus on Latinos comes as the Biden campaign launches a national program to engage and mobilize Latino voters. The Latino Biden vs. Harris campaign begins Tuesday and aims to activate a series of events to engage, train and mobilize Latino supporters.

Mr. Biden visited Nevada and Arizona with a strategy of targeting Mr. Trump on top issues such as immigration, as well as defending democracy, abortion rights and labor unions.

Biden is behind Trump in Arizona, with the former president leading by 5.1 percentage points, according to a poll tallied by Decision Desk Headquarters. Trump also has a lead in Nevada, with a 5.7% lead, according to polls.

The president defended his low poll numbers early Tuesday while in Nevada, saying he has been ahead of Trump in the last few national polls. He said the news organizations are all “good people” as some Democrats object to the media’s focus on the president’s low approval ratings for Trump.
