Biden judge STOPS Trump's plan to expand voter database — claims he 'violated' privacy rights

Federal Judge Blocks Trump’s Voter Database Expansion

A federal judge has prevented the Trump administration from using an expanded database aimed at purging foreign voters from the rolls.

U.S. District Judge Sparkle Skunanan expressed concerns that the government’s actions infringed on Americans’ privacy rights and could lead to the unjust removal of eligible voters.

“It’s striking how much resistance there is to addressing issues that some claim are nonexistent,” Skunanan stated. “The federal government shouldn’t compromise the rights of citizens to vote.” She emphasized that the court must intervene to protect these rights.

The administration attempted to bolster the SAVE federal database—intended for verifying voter eligibility—by incorporating various government data, including Social Security information.

However, Judge Skunanan ruled that this expansion contravened privacy protections established by Congress. She noted that the administration overlooked these regulations to conform to an executive order that aimed to construct a comprehensive voter verification system.

James Percival, the general counsel for the Department of Homeland Security, criticized the court’s decision. He tweeted, “It’s remarkable how determined the left is to prevent us from solving problems they insist don’t exist. Judge Skunanan’s ruling is another blow to our efforts for accurate voting records.”

Democracy Forward, the organization opposing the database expansion, hailed the ruling as a crucial win for voting rights. Skye Perryman, the group’s CEO, stated, “This is a significant victory for Americans and democracy itself, safeguarding millions from ungrounded investigations and illegal voter roll removals. The data implicated in this lawsuit was improperly aggregated, breaching laws designed to protect personal privacy.”

Additionally, Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer commented positively on the ruling via social media. “Today, we secured a vital victory for free and fair elections, staving off Donald Trump’s initiative for a sweeping voter purge database.” He claimed this effort was one of Trump’s more egregious plans aimed at overturning the upcoming election results.

Judge Skunanan was appointed to her position by President Joe Biden in January 2025, just before Trump began his second term.
