Biden states that the timing of his potential 2024 departure did not influence the race, saying ‘we had a strong candidate’.

Former President Joe Biden addressed the timing of his decision to step back from the 2024 presidential election, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris instead. He believes that his choice didn’t significantly affect the election’s outcome. When questioned about whether he acted too late, Biden expressed confidence that his decision wouldn’t notably change anything.

“I don’t think that’s important,” he remarked during his first interview since leaving office. He pointed out that Harris became the main Democratic candidate once he announced his withdrawal, emphasizing that she has solid backing from party supporters.

“It was a tough decision,” Biden acknowledged, adding, “I think it was the right decision. It was just a difficult decision.” He noted that some Democrats have speculated whether his late exit put Harris in a tough spot, facing challenges against Donald Trump.

Biden defended his administration’s achievements, suggesting that transitioning leadership to a new generation was complex. “We didn’t think anyone could do what we were trying to do. I was very successful with our agenda,” he said. It was challenging for him to consider halting progress. Despite concerns about Harris’s position, he maintained that his decision didn’t make a significant difference.

There have been increasing concerns about Biden’s mental fitness following his poor performance in last year’s debate against Trump. He appeared frail during various discussions, prompting criticism and calls for the media to do a better job covering his decline. Some journalists have acknowledged that they haven’t adequately addressed this aspect of Biden’s condition in their reporting.

At a recent White House correspondent dinner, Axios reporter Alex Thompson remarked on the failure to fully represent Biden’s struggles, highlighting how all administrations can conceal certain truths, regardless of their political affiliation.
