Biden to close border at 4,000 encounters per day, despite previously claiming he might not have ‘power’ to issue order

President Biden plans to issue an executive order to close the border once Border Patrol encounters reach 4,000 people per day, a White House official said. new york post on wednesday.

The administration is considering taking steps to curb the massive increase in illegal immigration, but has repeatedly argued that Biden may not have the authority to do so.

In an April interview with Univision’s Enrique Acevedo, he said: Mr. Biden said: The White House said it is “considering” whether the president has the “authority” under current law to close the border if the number of contacts exceeds 5,000 per day.

‘[A] It’s a cheap ploy in an election year.

“That’s not true. Absent a law, there’s no guarantee that I have that authority on my own. And some people say I should take the plunge and try, and if I don’t get shut down by the courts.” If I do, I’ll be shut down by the courts. But we’re going to work on it and get it resolved right now,” Biden told Acevedo.

Biden criticized Republican lawmakers for rejecting a bill in February that he said would have helped address the crisis at the southern border by adding more Border Patrol agents and other measures. Despite being billed as a border bill, the bill bundled large sums of money for military aid to Ukraine and Israel and humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Biden told reporters in January that he had “done everything we could” to stem the wave of illegal immigration. He asked Congress to “empower me.”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said In February, he said there was “nothing good” about the so-called border bill.

“Joe Biden just rubber stamped what he’s been doing for the last three and a half years, all the bad and none of the good,” Paxton said. “Republicans basically would have agreed with his failed policy of letting the border be violated.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) called the bill “a steaming pile of crap.”

Jeanine Pirro, co-host of FOX News’ The Five Said“This bill is not a border bill, it’s an immigration bill.”

“This is all about making sure we have enough people to handle illegal activities,” she said.

The Post reports that Biden’s proposed executive order mirrors provisions proposed in the failed bill. It is unclear when the order will be announced.

A spokesperson for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) told the Post that the president’s order “proves” that he had the authority all along, “to take action at the border. There is no need for Congress to pass a bill.”

Sen. Eric Schmidt (R-Missouri) called Biden’s move a “cheap ploy in an election year” and told the Post that the president “lost all credibility on the border issue.”
