James Carville Critiques Biden’s Timing in 2024 Election
James Carville, a longtime Democratic strategist, shared his thoughts on Sunday about the potential fallout from former President Joe Biden’s decision to stay in the race for the 2024 election longer than anticipated. He expressed that this move has negatively impacted the Democratic Party.
On the “Politics War Room” podcast, Carville remarked, “The Democratic Party is, well, it’s in this position mainly because Joe Biden won’t step down until July 21 of the election year.” He added, “Had Biden announced his departure in October 2023, I genuinely believe we could have secured a Democratic presidency. No denying that.”
Interestingly, Carville noted that many on the left who claim the Democrats are not aggressive enough haven’t criticized Biden for continuing his re-election bid. “It’s curious; none of them brought it up. They were all on the same page,” he said.
Previously, Carville has talked about the Democratic Party’s association with far-left identity politics. He believes this issue often tarnishes the party’s image, impeding efforts by some members to pivot toward a different direction.
Despite Carville’s observations, the Democratic Socialists seem to be gaining traction within the party, indicating a growing divide.
When asked about this shift, CNN analyst Ron Brownstein admitted he was uncertain about where the party is heading, suggesting, “I’m really grappling with how to process this change, both politically and personally.”
Brownstein also pointed to the lessons from the 2026 election. He stated, “For centrists to have a shot in 2028, they need to prove two key things: they’ve learned from prior mistakes and they’re ready to confront the MAGA movement with renewed vigor.” He expressed skepticism about the idea that the left would prevail in 2028 but emphasized that centrists must fight hard to retain influence.
Despite his critique of the party’s leftward lean, Carville was clear in his belief that change is necessary. “We faced loss because people sought a change in leadership, and we didn’t deliver that,” he said. “Now that they’re calling for us to fight back? Well, that’s great, I guess.” He added, “The core issue with the Democratic Party right now stems from Biden’s late withdrawal. If I had to guess, I’d say had we acted sooner, the results wouldn’t have been nearly as close.”
Brownstein, however, didn’t fully agree, arguing, “I’m not convinced the Democrats would have won even with an earlier exit, but it’s undeniable that staying in the race has diminished his chances.”
While comments were sought from Biden, there was no immediate response.
