“Real Time” host Bill Maher hinted Friday night that the effects of inflation could ultimately hurt President Biden at the polls, suggesting former President Trump’s popularity among young voters. He is alarmed by the support he is receiving.
“What the heck is going on with this guy? He’s always gaining with the people he’s supposed to be losing,” Maher complained during a panel discussion Friday. “Right now, he’s up 5 points among 18-29 respondents!…65% of Gen Z say they believe Trump will change the country for the better. See, here’s the thing. “There are two kinds of voters. There are those who know things and there are those who make decisions based solely on emotion.”
“Yes, Mr. Trump, I understand. He looks tougher.” [than Biden]”Mr. Maher admitted before comparing President Trump’s ‘yellow hair’ and red tie to McDonald’s. “Kids love brands. It’s a brand.”

Former Democratic congressman Beto O’Rourke says young voters like the “shock value” and “entertainment” they get from President Trump, and how Trump attracts voters by “distracting and attracting attention.” He responded by suggesting that he was a “master.” O’Rourke went on to argue that the Biden administration has championed issues for young Americans, such as climate change and gun control. ABC News contributor Sarah Isgur told Maher that young people have “incredible frustration with the establishment,” and that they have a strong reaction to the regime against Trump, whom they see as a “traitor.” He said he was watching the side attack.

Later in the discussion, Ma theorized that Trump is attracting younger voters because he’s a “big liar” and pointed to Trump’s comments about food costs.
“He says this about food: ‘Food prices are 40, 50, 60 percent higher than they were a few years ago.'” Well, since Biden became president, grocery prices have gone up by about 20 percent. It’s going up, but it’s not all Biden’s fault,” Maher said. “Trump says ‘5x’ bacon. Well, that’s a 12% increase. Look, this is a big problem when you don’t know anything.”
“I feel like Biden is going to lose this election because hot dogs are going to cost more,” Maher added.

The HBO host went on to read quotes from young voters to the Washington Post, one of which was, “When Trump was president, there was no inflation. We could afford food.” That’s what it was. Another read, “Trump, there was no inflation.” Prices have really gone up since Biden took office. ”
“You know, we’ve just been lucky for 20 years and we haven’t had much inflation,” Maher responded. “So maybe you haven’t lived in a time where there was inflation. So you’re like, ‘Oh, Mr. Trump, there’s no inflation. Mr. Biden, it’s inflation. We’re voting for Trump!’ That’s what you think.”

Maher later pointed to numbers from President Reagan’s successful 1984 election, when inflation, unemployment and interest rates were higher than they are now in 2024.
“It’s a little different from what we expected, isn’t it?” Maher asked.
In response, Ysgur pointed to the influence of social media and how “the loudest, angriest, most outrageous voices” are telling voters “to be angry” because they “hate the other person.” He emphasized that he is motivating people to vote.
“That’s why we don’t get the good stuff,” Isgur quipped.
