Bills face backlash over Indigenous Peoples' Day message

Buffalo Bills Celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day

The Buffalo Bills took to social media on Monday to mark Indigenous Peoples Day, stepping away from the traditional celebration of Columbus Day. This move stirred up quite a bit of controversy among fans.

Indigenous Peoples Day is intended to honor the Native American tribes impacted by European colonization, positioning itself as a significant alternative to Columbus Day. It spotlights the resilience and history of Indigenous communities.

Interestingly, Buffalo, New York, recognizes both days. However, the Bills focused solely on Indigenous Peoples Day, also noting that it coincided with Canadian Thanksgiving.

Meanwhile, just last week, former President Donald Trump proclaimed Columbus Day in a gesture to celebrate Italian heritage. He stated, “Columbus apparently discovered the New World in 1492… This day is particularly important for Italian Americans, who honor the explorer’s contributions.” His remarks were met with applause from the audience.

Trump expressed enthusiasm about the reception, remarking, “I’ve never seen anything like it. In fact, there was applause from the press.” He emphasized a sense of pride, proclaiming, “Columbus Day. We’re back, Italians. We love Italians.”

Columbus Day has been a federal holiday since 1971, but in recent years, a number of activists have pressed for a reevaluation of its significance. They argue that honoring Columbus perpetuates a narrative of colonialism and the violence faced by Native Americans. There have been efforts to dismantle statues of Columbus in various cities, especially after events in 2020 prompted widespread discussion on these issues.
