Bolton: Trump tariffs may push India closer to Russia, China

Bolton Warns of India’s Response to Trump’s Tariffs

John Bolton, a former national security adviser, expressed concerns on Wednesday that President Trump’s proposed tariffs might further distance India from the US and strengthen Russia’s ties with China.

The president had indicated he would impose a 25% tariff on oil imported from Russia by India, which contrasts with the lack of similar penalties for China, a nation that has been increasing its oil purchases from Russia.

“India’s response to this has been to procure even more oil and gas from Russia, particularly since China isn’t facing any tariffs. This has really upset many in India, and there’s speculation that Putin may visit India later this year,” he noted.

Bolton also mentioned that Prime Minister Modi is set to visit China for the first time since 2018, suggesting that both Moscow and Beijing will actively seek to strengthen their relationship with India.

This year, the US and China faced a significant trade conflict, with tariff rates spiking three times, leading to consumer concerns about rising prices.

Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping eventually agreed to reduce the tariffs to a medium level—10% on US exports and 30% on imports from China.

The president has since been cautious about reigniting tariff disputes with China while addressing Russia’s influence.

During Trump’s initial term, Prime Minister Modi and he shared a close relationship, participating in events that highlighted their nations’ partnership.

Trump had previously referred to India as “America’s greatest, most dedicated, and most loyal friend.”

However, in his recent comments, Trump’s focus shifted to India’s tariff policies. “People don’t often mention it, but India has the highest tariffs in the world. We engage minimally with India because of these tariffs,” he claimed last week.

“So we’re sitting at a 25% tariff, but if we’re buying Russian oil, we’re doing it very strategically over the next few days. They’re supporting the war effort. If that happens, it won’t sit well with me,” he added.

In a recent social media update, Modi reiterated India’s longstanding ties with Russia.
