Border Official Suggests Newsom and Bass May Face Federal Charges for Handling ICE Riot

Potential Federal Charges for California Leadership

Tom Homan, the former Trump administration border chief, commented on Sunday that California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass could face federal charges following recent ICE operations that led to violent protests in Los Angeles, Compton, and Paramount.

Speaking to NBC, Homan expressed concern that “someone loses his life” during the clashes between protesters and federal agents. He mentioned that he had urged the Department of Justice (DOJ) to consider prosecuting government officials, although he did not directly accuse them of inciting anti-ICE riots. It seems he is worried about the escalating tensions and possible consequences.

There have been alarming reactions, especially after over 100 undocumented immigrants, many identified as gang members and drug traffickers, were arrested during recent raids in downtown Los Angeles and nearby areas. This move, according to Reuters, sparked violent responses from protesters, who resorted to burning cars, throwing rocks and fireworks, and vandalizing property with messages like “kill ICE.” Law enforcement responded with tear gas to disperse the angry crowds.

In part due to this unrest, President Trump has deployed 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, a decision that has drawn public criticism from both Newsom and Bass.

Additionally, Homan indicated that the DOJ may pursue criminal charges against local or state authorities who interfere with federal immigration efforts. Although both Newsom and Bass have clearly stated their opposition to the use of force in these matters, Homan emphasized that there could be severe legal repercussions for anyone—especially elected officials—who obstruct federal operations.

As for the situation surrounding schools during the protests, Homan rejected claims of involvement in the violence, asserting that “there was no one outside the school,” according to NBC.
