The California school district apologized after a US Border Patrol recruiter “inadvertently” denied access to a high school career fair this week, saying it was a “misunderstanding.”

The Coachella Valley Unified School District said on Wednesday that the Border Patrol recruiter to a career fair at Coachella Valley High School was “inadvertently denied” by the principal.

“We want to be very clear that we will not tolerate this behavior and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken with the members of staff involved to ensure that this does not happen again,” the district said in a news release.

“Our students have greatly appreciated the valuable interactions and insights they gained from learning about law enforcement and Border Patrol careers,” it continued. “We recognize the importance of providing students with real-world career options and opportunities.”

The district added that it welcomes the presence of border patrols at the future career fairs of the three high schools.

Earlier this year, the district began equipping schools with red cards known as “know your rights” cards, helping people to assert their rights and protect themselves in the event they encounter federal immigration authorities, the newspaper reported.

Last week, the school board approved policies addressing immigration-related concerns, including how to deal with immigration enforcement.
