Conflict Between Boston Mayor and Federal Prosecutors
In a recent exchange, federal prosecutors in Massachusetts have taken issue with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s comments regarding ICE operations. Wu accused the federal government of acting like a “secret police” and putting ICE agents in jeopardy due to a rise in arrests targeting illegal immigrants.
U.S. Attorney Leah Foley responded sharply, criticizing Wu’s statements as “reckless and inflammatory.” She emphasized that there is nothing secretive about the arrests being made, stating that ICE and other federal law enforcement agencies are actively apprehending individuals who are in the country illegally.
“I won’t apologize for doing my job,” Foley remarked, reinforcing her stance in a video statement.
Foley pointed out that agents working in marked gear are sometimes forced to conceal their faces because of misinformation circulating, which she claims endangers them and their families. She stressed that arrests are carried out in alignment with federal law, firmly rejecting Wu’s assertion that individuals are being indiscriminately apprehended from the streets.
“The arrests are made under authorized protocols,” she stated. Foley’s comments suggest that she feels protective of Massachusetts residents, despite the actions of what she characterizes as misinformed politicians.
Wu retorted that her constituents are witnessing the reality of these arrests, suggesting that local residents have firsthand experience of the situation. “I can’t imagine police officers wearing masks on a daily basis,” she mentioned during an interview.
It’s become clear that Wu remains steadfast against cooperating with ICE operations, particularly in light of the stricter immigration policies implemented during the Trump administration.
