Anthony Joshua Involved in Fatal Car Accident

British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a tragic car accident in Nigeria on Monday morning, just weeks after his recent victory over Jake Paul. While Joshua sustained only minor injuries, the crash unfortunately resulted in the deaths of two key members of his team, his conditioning coach and personal trainer.

Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, both 36, were killed in the incident. They were well-respected figures in the boxing community, known for their supportive roles in Joshua’s career and their close relationship with him.

Currently, Joshua is in stable condition at a hospital, and it seems he will make a full recovery.

“It is with the deepest and most profound sadness that we confirm the deaths of Sina Ghami and Kevin ‘Lateef’ Ayodele following a road traffic accident in Lagos, Nigeria,” a representative for Joshua stated to the media. “Both were close friends and integral members of Anthony’s team. We ask for privacy for their families as they process this devastating news. Anthony is receiving treatment and is stable at the hospital.”

According to the Nigerian Federal Road Safety Corps, Joshua was a rear-seat passenger in a Lexus SUV traveling over the speed limit. The vehicle reportedly lost control during an attempted overtaking maneuver and collided with a stationary truck. An investigation is underway, with some reports suggesting a tire blowout might have contributed to the accident.

A police report from Nigeria noted: “The vehicle carrying Mr. Joshua was involved in an accident under circumstances currently being investigated. Joshua sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical attention along with another injured person. Tragically, two passengers in the vehicle lost their lives at the scene. Their bodies have been taken to the morgue, and the Ogun state police command extends condolences to the families of the deceased.”

Before this incident, Joshua had been enjoying a holiday in Nigeria with family and friends, having arrived shortly after his December 19 defeat of Jake Paul by knockout in the sixth round.

The Nigerian president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressed his condolences on social media:

“AJ, I extend my deepest sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which took two lives and caused you injuries. This tremendous tragedy casts a shadow over this season. I sympathize with you and your family as you cope with this loss.”

“I have spoken with AJ to personally convey my condolences over the passing of his two close associates in the recent accident. I wished him a full and speedy recovery and prayed with him,” he added.
