New York City Councilman Chi Ose Arrested in Brooklyn
Footage has emerged showing New York City Councilman Chi Ose being taken down and arrested during a protest against the eviction of a woman in Brooklyn. This incident occurred on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
Ose, who aligns with democratic socialist views and supports Mayor Zoran Mamdani, was reportedly defending a constituent who had lived in her home for 60 years. According to a statement from his office, Black evictions are happening in Bed-Stuy, and residents are fighting against deed theft in Brooklyn.
In the chaotic video, an onlooker is heard questioning, “Mom, that’s a city councilor, what is he doing?” as Ose was being arrested.
A spokesperson from the New York City Police Department indicated that Ose was among four individuals arrested on charges of obstruction of government and disorderly conduct.
After the arrest, Ose expressed his intent to file a complaint of misconduct against the officers involved, stating, “I know there are two people who did the same thing that I did, and they have reported that they are now dealing with concussions.” He emphasized the need for accountability and urged the police commissioner to take complaints seriously.
The New York City Department of Finance describes deed theft as occurring when a criminal files a fraudulent deed or lien against a property without the owner’s knowledge or consent. Victims often include seniors, immigrants, and people of color.
A police spokesperson explained that the Sheriff’s Office had a signed order from a judge to proceed with the eviction. However, when officers arrived, they found protesters blocking the entrance.
The spokesperson noted that Ose was detained after attempting to block access to the gate in front of the building, despite police attempts to manage the crowd. Ose reportedly resisted arrest, flailing his arms in an effort to avoid being restrained.
Following the incident, a police representative defended the actions of the officers, stating that procedures were followed in the arrest.
