Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas start the Ryder Cup with a display of the American flag

The Ryder Cup has kicked off, and the American team showed up with considerable enthusiasm, even before dawn. Fans began their journey—walking from the Farmingdale Long Island Railway Station to Bethpage Black in the early morning darkness, around 5 AM, ahead of the first tee time set for 7:10 AM.

This experience was one many won’t forget, a kind of thrill only captured in moments like these. The atmosphere? Electric. EDM music thumped, chants of “USA” echoed, and, well, a few choice words were hurled at Rory McIlroy when he appeared on the big screen.

Notably, moments of patriotism shone through. Fans even improvised a couple of sketches of the national anthem, which added to the excitement. Just before 7 AM, a flyover took place, and moments before the first shot, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas stepped up to the tee, both draped in the American flag. It was a powerful visual, showing camaraderie that transcended any rivalry between the LIV Golf and PGA Tour.

As is often the case in this high-stakes competition, the mood felt palpable. DeChambeau, who’s back in the Ryder Cup after a two-year hiatus, quickly made his mark, driving mostly to the green and sinking a birdie putt on the opening hole. He expressed gratitude for the chance to represent his country again, reflecting on how much it means to be part of this team.

“I really wanted to be here. Missing the last Ryder Cup in Rome was tough for me,” he said. “Words can’t adequately tell you how passionate I am about this team. We’ve got something special here, and it’s been incredible how our captain has united us.”

Security is ramping up around the venue as President Donald Trump is expected to visit Bethpage Black on Friday.
