Bryson DeChambeau Undergoes Surgery Amid Criticism

Bryson DeChambeau had surgery on Tuesday.

Following an attack on him by Nick Faldo during a Sky Sports segment, Golf Channel’s Brandel Chamblee responded with his own critique during a clip from “Live from the Open” that aired the same day. Chamblee seemed to mock DeChambeau’s aspirations, highlighting his popular YouTube channel.

“One of the biggest surprises this year is Bryson DeChambeau,” Chamblee remarked. “It’s almost as if he has shifted from competing against Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy to aiming at Grant Horvat. It feels like he’s more interested in outperforming YouTubers at golf rather than the traditional competitors.”

The critique isn’t entirely surprising, as DeChambeau has faced significant backlash from golf pundits. He missed all major tournaments this year but will be at this week’s British Open at Royal Birkdale. Given his absence from three of golf’s four major events this year, some of the criticism has merit.

Though he has seen success in LIV Golf events this year, he hasn’t made a mark in the major tournaments until recently. DeChambeau, who clinched victories at the 2020 and 2024 U.S. Opens, is keen to avoid the rare occurrence of qualifying for none of the four majors in a single year—a situation not seen since 1998.

During an interview with Sky Sports, Faldo challenged DeChambeau’s strategic abilities on the course, specifically referencing comments he made about wanting to “attack the rink.”

Faldo, who has an impressive resume including three British Opens and three Masters titles, criticized DeChambeau further: “Why is it that they can’t perform as LIV superstars? That’s part of the problem. He really has no idea about strategy,” Faldo said, adding, “I play smart. I hit the fairway.”

DeChambeau, along with others from the LIV Tour, is facing uncertainty regarding the future of the Rebels Golf League. Concerns are growing as the Saudi Public Investment Fund plans to withdraw its financial backing after this season.

Earlier, in May, a source revealed that if his current golf league were to dissolve, DeChambeau expressed a desire to focus on expanding his YouTube channel while also participating in tournaments that require his presence.

Chamblee, known for his blunt comments, previously referred to DeChambeau as a “circus tout” and a “captain’s nightmare” before the Ryder Cup last September.
