Buffett Takes New Direction in Philanthropy
Warren Buffett recently shared that he informed Bill Gates of his decision to cease donations to the Gates Foundation after a 20-year commitment. This announcement came as he revealed plans to donate roughly $6 billion in Berkshire Hathaway stock, notably excluding the Gates Foundation amidst scrutiny over Gates’ past connections with the late Jeffrey Epstein.
In a candid moment, Buffett addressed Gates’s past by saying, “It’s uncomfortable, but while he has made mistakes, I have too—like bringing certain people into my circle only to realize they weren’t who I thought they were.” He found it challenging yet relatable, perhaps suggesting that nobody is above errors in judgment.
Since 2006, Buffett has contributed over $47 billion in Berkshire stock to Gates’s charitable endeavors. However, this year, he shifted his focus towards four family foundations overseen by his children: Susie, Howard, and Peter. He expressed confidence in their readiness to assume responsibility for his wealth, stating, “I’ve told my three children that it’s theirs and it’s their task to manage it wisely.”
Buffett also made notable changes to his distribution strategy. He now plans to expedite the significant distribution of Berkshire stock—which accounts for a 13% stake in the company, valued at over $1 trillion—aiming to complete this process by the end of 2034. This shift comes partly due to his children aging, emphasizing that Susie Buffett will be 81 by that target date.
He reflected on his situation, remarking, “It’s not just about when you die; it’s about whether you keep safeguarding your legacy.” Following these recent donations, Buffett will have contributed over $23 billion in Berkshire stock to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, the Sherwood Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and the Novo Foundation.
