Buttigieg Claims Trump Causes People to Trust China Over the US in Doing What’s Right

Buttigieg Critiques Trump’s Impact on U.S. Global Standing

On Wednesday, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg expressed concerns regarding President Donald Trump’s influence on America’s standing in the world. During an appearance on “Late Night with Stephen Colbert,” he remarked that Trump’s administration has led to a noticeable decline in how the United States is perceived globally.

Buttigieg stated that, under Trump, more people are choosing to trust communist China over the United States. He reflected on his own experiences, saying, “When I was in school, America was viewed as the leading country in the world—not just as the most powerful, but as a nation admired for its values.” He emphasized that the current situation, where trust in China appears to surpass trust in the U.S., is concerning for all Americans who care about their country’s reputation.

China’s long-standing military and economic ambitions pose significant challenges to the U.S. and the West. The nation has been actively modernizing its military capabilities, with the potential to reach U.S. territories, including Hawaii and Alaska. Furthermore, allegations of espionage have surfaced, with claims of Chinese infiltration into American airspace and educational institutions.

Economically, the Chinese government remains a competitor to the West. In response, the Trump administration is focused on revitalizing U.S. manufacturing and job opportunities. A notable example of this dynamic is ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok. It operates a more controlled version of the app for its domestic market while providing a more engaging version to users in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Additionally, there are local implications to consider. Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu’s administration is reportedly connected to nonprofits that have engaged with members of the Chinese Communist Party and intelligence networks at City Hall. Her 2021 campaign also received substantial financial support from an organization linked to an individual recognized as a CCP member.

Looking ahead, President Trump is set to visit China in May, aiming to address and stabilize the relationship between the two nations.
