Controversy Surrounds Cannabis Farm and Its Donations

The co-founder of a prominent cannabis farm, Glasshouse Farm, has been linked to significant donations to Governor Gavin Newsom and other Democratic officials, according to financial records.

Graham Fara, a key figure behind Glasshouse Farm in Ventura County, which is noted as California’s largest marijuana cultivation site, has been recognized for his role in advancing the cannabis industry.

Recent events have exposed troubling labor practices at the farm, particularly during a violent raid that led to the apprehension of 361 undocumented workers, including 14 minors (of which eight were unaccompanied). Tensions escalated when a protester clashed with a law enforcement agent, resulting in one worker’s death after falling from a greenhouse.

Fara has a history of contributing to various Democratic candidates and causes throughout California. His financial support extends to federal political action committees and officials like Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-CA), as detailed in campaign finance records. Back in 2019, he was photographed presenting a sizable check to local educational officials.

Following the recent incidents, Glass House Brands, the parent company, stated that they have “never intentionally violated any applicable employment practices,” emphasizing that they do not employ minors.

Fara himself expressed commitment to “caring for people and plants,” a sentiment shared in a post on social media.

Glasshouse Brands, co-founded by Fara and fellow entrepreneur Kyle Kazan, achieved a market capitalization of $300 million last year, highlighting significant growth in the sector. Kazan, who has a background in law enforcement and education, has been noted for his support of President Trump, which adds a layer of complexity to the company’s reputation.

While the farm promotes sustainable business practices, such as eco-friendly farming methods, federal investigations contradict this image, focusing on labor violations. DHS Deputy Director Tricia McLaughlin described the plight of the employed children as resembling “exploitation” and hinted at severe issues like forced child labor and human trafficking.

Further complicating matters, Juan Duarte Velázquez, an undocumented immigrant with a criminal history, was also apprehended on the farm.

Newsom has yet to respond to inquiries regarding Fara’s donations but has previously criticized reports from Fox News. He pointed out the perceived hypocrisy from the network, given its ties to Trump supporters.
