Arrest Made in Arizona Murder Case Linked to California Magnate
More than a month after a woman was found shot inside her home in Arizona, investigators have uncovered evidence connecting the crime to Michael Abati, a prominent farmer from California. This development has transformed a local murder inquiry into a multi-agency investigation.
The case centers around 59-year-old Kelly Ann Abati, who was allegedly shot through a window of her home in Pinetop, Arizona, on November 20. Her estranged husband, Michael Abati, 63, was arrested on December 23 and faces first-degree murder charges.
On the night of the shooting, police responded to a 911 call and discovered Kelly suffering from gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to the hospital.
Investigators later learned that Michael Abati was in the midst of a bitter divorce at the time of the incident, with financial issues reportedly fueling tensions between the couple.
Authorities say evidence shows that Michael traveled from California to Arizona on the day of the murder and returned shortly afterward. Sheriff David Close stated in a press conference that detectives were closely tracking his movements and noted that they had strong reasons to believe he committed the crime before heading back.
Witnesses, including a neighbor who initially thought they heard an explosion, reported hearing a loud noise around the time of the shooting, later determined to be a gunshot. Kelly was well-known in the Pinetop community, making the incident all the more shocking for those nearby.
The investigation revealed that Kelly was found by her nephew, who lived on the property and mistakenly believed she had just fallen before discovering she had been shot. Forensic evidence indicated that shots were fired from the backyard, with reports supporting a large-caliber weapon being used.
As the investigation progressed, law enforcement from multiple agencies in both Arizona and California collaborated to piece together the events leading to Kelly’s death. This involved extensive interviews and gathering evidence from the surrounding neighborhood, as well as executing search warrants in California.
Michael Abati comes from a well-established farming family in California’s Imperial Valley, known for their contributions to agricultural business and community leadership. The couple’s divorce, initiated by Kelly in 2023, was ongoing at the time of her death, with legal battles concerning financial support complicating matters.
Michael’s attorney has indicated that he plans to plead not guilty and has mentioned health concerns regarding his client. Currently, Michael remains in custody in California as he awaits extradition to face charges in Arizona. Authorities have not disclosed when this will take place.
