California Democrat urges arrest of ICE agent involved in Renee Good's death

Calls for Accountability After Fatal ICE Shooting in Minneapolis

California Democratic Representative Ro Khanna is urging for the arrest and prosecution of the ICE agent involved in the shooting death of Renee Goode, which occurred on January 7th in a Minneapolis neighborhood.

Alongside Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett, Khanna is pushing for new legislation that would mandate ICE agents to wear body cameras, display visible identification, and avoid wearing masks while on duty. He believes these measures, along with independent oversight, are essential for accountability.

In a recent post on X, he stated his intention regarding the ICE agent’s prosecution, emphasizing his call for Congress to support his proposed bill. He asserted, “We will force ICE officers to wear body cameras instead of masks, have visible identification, and ensure ICE has independent oversight.”

Local Response to the Incident

Goode, a 37-year-old woman, was shot during a federal enforcement operation in south Minneapolis. Authorities have claimed that the ICE agent shot in self-defense as Goode allegedly aimed her vehicle at them while they attempted to arrest her.

The incident led to widespread protests in Minneapolis and remote demonstrations, with many calling for significant changes to federal immigration enforcement policies.

Local leaders have voiced strong disapproval of the federal government’s account of the shooting. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have both rejected the self-defense claims, noting that the scale of immigration enforcement has been “grossly disproportionate” and doesn’t align with community safety.

Subsequently, Minnesota filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, alleging that the recent immigration enforcement actions have been “illegal” and “unprecedented.” Frey remarked, “What we’re seeing now is not normal immigration enforcement.” In response, the Trump administration defended its actions, with the Department of Homeland Security accusing Minnesota leaders of undermining public safety.

Federal officials stand by their assertion that the actions taken were justified. On a related note, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has criticized Democrats and responded to calls for her impeachment following the shooting, emphasizing the rigorous training law enforcement officers undergo to navigate dangerous situations appropriately.
