California Democrats have made criminal justice laws less strict, according to the US Attorney.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli criticized California Democrats for diluting the state’s criminal laws following a significant drug enforcement operation in the Skid Row area on Thursday, led by federal law enforcement.

In a conversation with Fox News Digital, Essayli expressed that while coordination between state, local, and federal authorities is effective, politicians are, in his view, the main barrier. He said, “Unfortunately, states like California have completely weakened their laws, particularly in criminal justice. They’ve also emptied their prisons and closed facilities, meaning there’s really not much deterrence on the state level. No one faces serious repercussions here.”

He acknowledged the role of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass in authorizing the police department’s involvement in the recent Operation Save Skid Row, indicating that collaboration at that level is essential.

However, he continued, emphasizing the current political environment, “This is a time when some are trying to defund the police. Those advocating for disarming the LAPD are, in essence, aligning themselves with criminals. It’s quite alarming.”

Operation Save Skid Row targeted drug distribution networks in the area, resulting in 28 arrest warrants and 44 search warrants being executed. Over 100 law enforcement vehicles participated, focusing on known gang members, including those from the Main Street Crips and the Pueblo Bishop Bloods.

Essayli pointed out a troubling connection between the drug dealers arrested and the homeless individuals suffering in the area. He stated, “We are determined to eliminate open-air drug markets in the U.S., especially here. Many of the homeless experiencing crises are trapped in addiction, often because of the very dealers we’ve apprehended.”
