California Lawmaker Proposes Bill to Ban ICE Rentals
A Democratic lawmaker in California has put forward a bill that aims to prevent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from renting vehicles from any rental car companies. Introduced by Rep. Jessica Caroza (D-52) and supported by Rep. Liz Ortega (D-20), the bill is designed to address ongoing tensions surrounding ICE.
The legislation states that existing laws regulate how rental companies conduct business, prohibiting them from requiring additional services like liability waivers or insurance. It also explicitly bars rental car companies from renting vehicles to ICE.
Public sentiment against ICE has escalated recently, especially following the tragic incident involving Renee Nicole Good, who was killed by an ICE agent after allegedly trying to run over an officer. Protests against federal agents have grown in intensity, particularly after the death of Alex Preti at the hands of Border Patrol agents.
ICE has reported alarming increases in assaults against its agents—over 1,300%, to be exact—with vehicle attacks spiking by 3,200% and death threats rising by 8,000%.
Caroza, who identifies as a proud immigrant and has ties to former President Barack Obama, alongside Ortega, who has a long history advocating for diverse communities, hopes this bill will make a significant impact. Fox News Digital has reached out to both lawmakers and ICE for their reactions on this matter.
