Steyer’s Bold Proposal Against ICE
Tom Steyer, vying for the California governorship, has made headlines by suggesting that agents from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should be jailed for their actions.
On social media, he criticized President Trump for exploiting society’s most vulnerable while benefiting those in power. Steyer has called for abolishing ICE, advocating for direct action against what he describes as Trump and ICE’s “authoritarian takeover.” He believes it’s necessary to confront ICE directly, targeting their agents and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), aiming to put them behind bars.
Steyer characterized ICE’s actions as akin to a criminal organization, alleging that they engage in racial profiling and use violence, intimidation, and terror to uphold the current administration’s agenda.
If he were to become governor, Steyer laid out five major initiatives to empower California in its fight against ICE. His first move would involve enacting laws to ban racial and ethnic profiling by ICE agents. He stressed that legislation would be based on existing California statutes.
Steyer’s second plan would entail granting the state’s attorney general the authority to hold ICE personnel responsible for violent conduct. The third step involves establishing a special investigative unit, which would work alongside the Attorney General to gather evidence for prosecuting both agents and their superiors.
Additionally, he aims to “repatriate” individuals who may have been unjustly detained by ICE, thereby strengthening legal defense for immigrants. Finally, he wants to initiate a statewide campaign to educate the public about their rights.
Controversy surrounding immigration continues, highlighted by reports suggesting that Governor Gavin Newsom secretly allocated $1 billion to facilitate the entry of 400,000 immigrants from underprivileged countries into California.
Newsom has reportedly provided funds to nonprofit organizations that not only support the influx of immigrants but also challenge deportation orders in court and organize protests against ICE.
