California graduate student caught in suspected bomb plot after leaving alarming note in restroom

A graduate student from San Jose State University was arrested recently for allegedly spreading hate and fear on campus.

The Department of Justice announced that a student, identified as Ziheng “Tony” Fang, was taken into custody for reportedly writing bomb threats alongside hateful messages. Fang, who is pursuing a master’s in data science, is believed to be connected to various incidents, including one in November 2025 involving numerous hateful notes.

One note reportedly contained alarming language such as “Kill all Jews, Muslims, Swiss and Mexicans,” and threatened mass bombings on specific dates. Another message ominously warned, “There will be a mass bomb next week.”

This threat emerged from a restroom in McCallie Hall at SJSU, prompting university police to increase patrols on campus following the incident.

Reports indicate that Fang, 30, from San Jose, had access to the building prior to the discovery of these menacing messages. Surveillance footage purportedly shows Fang entering areas where the messages were found just days before.

Since October 2024, SJSU Police have reported over 20 incidents involving hateful and threatening messages discovered in campus restrooms. Instances of graffiti and racially charged language have been documented, including slurs targeting various groups and threats regarding mass violence.

Fang had previously faced charges for vandalism and making public threats against the university in May. After federal charges were introduced, he made his initial court appearance on July 10 and returned to court for further proceedings today.
