Fairfield Mayor Resigns Amid Residency Investigation
The mayor of Fairfield stepped down unexpectedly on Tuesday, just hours before the city council had planned to discuss the findings of a contentious investigation into her residency status, which had cast a shadow over her remaining time in office.
Katherine Moy’s resignation came ahead of a special council meeting that was set to explore if she met the necessary residency requirements for her position, putting an end to months of political unrest before any formal action could be taken.
During the meeting, no one occupied the mayor’s seat, and Vice Mayor Pam Bertani took over as acting mayor. “I never thought something like this could happen,” Bertani expressed during the proceedings.
An external attorney, tapped to investigate the claims, concluded that there wasn’t enough evidence suggesting that Moy resided outside Fairfield. But ultimately, the decision lay with the council on whether to take any further steps.
Moy resigned just before this critical discussion. In her resignation letter, she claimed the investigation was fueled by political motives, alleging that four council members targeted her while squandering taxpayer funds.
With her departure, city officials indicated that the investigation is essentially concluded. Nonetheless, public comments reflected mixed feelings among residents, sparking continued debate.
“We’re like a banana republic,” remarked one resident. “This feels like a political hit that lets the corrupt carry on,” echoed another. Conversely, a third resident defended Moy, stating, “No one is more tied to Fairfield than Cat Moy. She grew up here, raised her family here.” However, some felt that Moy had contributed to her own downfall.
Another commenter noted, “This isn’t about special interests. It’s about Cat’s career going up in flames. I’m here to salute her for her achievements.”
The council also deliberated on whether the city should foot the legal bills stemming from the residency dispute, but they reported that Moy hadn’t disclosed the total expenses. Ultimately, a 5-1 vote denied her request for financial assistance.
“The reason she needs these attorney fees is exactly why we shouldn’t cover them,” stated Council member K. Patrice Williams.
This resignation comes during a turbulent time for Fairfield, which has faced notable controversies recently, including a police arrest related to an incident at Fairfield High School and a shooting near a graduation ceremony.
Bertani addressed the residents, emphasizing the need for unity in light of recent events, saying, “We’re in the news for all the wrong reasons.”
As for the future, Bertani will continue her role as mayor pro tem while the council determines who will complete the mayor’s term. A decision is anticipated next week, with the election for Fairfield’s new mayor slated for November.
