California Democratic Representative Juan Vargas has called for defunding the Department of Homeland Security, specifically regarding ICE operations. This push for defunding law enforcement gained traction after George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis in 2020. While many Democrats have since been distancing themselves from such ideas, some, like Vargas, are continuing to advocate for defunding ICE.
The tragic death of Renee Good during an immigration raid in Minneapolis led to widespread protests and some unrest. According to the DHS, the federal agent who shot Good was injured when her car hit him. This week, political podcaster Kate Powell discussed the controversy with Vargas on her show, “Noem’s Impeachment.”
In his remarks, Vargas criticized DHS Secretary Kristi Noem’s leadership, stating that she has not only violated the law but also encouraged lawbreaking within ICE and related agencies. He described an ideal America as one embodied by Good—”kind and good” and focused on helping others.
During the podcast, Powell expressed surprise at the funds allocated for DHS employees’ body cameras, suggesting that perhaps the focus should be on completely cutting funds to an agency with such conduct. She said, “Get rid of her and we’ll talk about more money.” Vargas echoed this sentiment, insisting it’s time for drastic changes and fighting to limit ICE’s operations to those who commit serious crimes like murder and rape.
He lamented that ICE seems to be attacking families, referencing the ongoing situation in Minnesota. Vargas remarked on the bravery of those protesting, pointedly stating that what’s happening is morally wrong and should not be tolerated.
