A candidate for a school board in the Sacramento area has acknowledged using offensive language, including calling people “retards” and employing the term “gay” as a slur in several social media posts that have come to light on Reddit.
A Reddit user shared screenshots from earlier this year showing posts from an account believed to belong to Kirk Thomson, who is campaigning for a trustee position in the Elk Grove Unified School District.
One particular post responded to whether the term “retard” was acceptable, indicating it might be used “only when describing Democrat politicians and their ideas.”
Thomson reportedly used the slur multiple times, suggesting it was “making a comeback,” and even directed it towards well-known commentator Piers Morgan.
Furthermore, the posts included the term “gay” used derogatorily, along with hints at a racial slur, as initially reported by the Sacramento Bee.
The posts reportedly date back to 2025 and 2026, and it appears Thomson’s account on X has since been deleted.
After the resurfacing of his tweets, Thomson admitted to his inappropriate language in a statement but suggested he would not withdraw from the election race.
“Old posts from my personal Twitter account surfaced this week, and I used language that is hurtful to people with disabilities. That was wrong. I am genuinely sorry for it. No excuses. I own it,” he stated.
“This isn’t just theoretical for me. My own child has a disability, and my family understands what it takes to secure the support that kids like ours need. That’s part of why I’m running: to advocate for improved special education programs and ensure transparency from the EGUSD board.”
His remarks have drawn criticism, leading several elected officials to withdraw their endorsements. School Board Trustee Heidi Moore announced that she could no longer support his candidacy after learning of the comments.
Republican Assemblymember Josh Hoover also stated he would no longer back Thomson, emphasizing that such language is unacceptable for someone aiming to represent families and students on the school board.
Additionally, multiple law enforcement organizations, including the Elk Grove Police Officers Association and the Sacramento County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, have rescinded their endorsements, affirming that Thomson’s comments do not align with the values they uphold.
Thomson, who is running against incumbent Michael Vargas, has children enrolled in the district and advocates for better financial management of the board alongside increased parental transparency.
He has also publicly mentioned more controversial views in the past, such as supporting a ban on transgender students in girls’ sports.
