On Wednesday, Gov. Bill Lee signed a bill that would grant a 130% property tax refund to those whose homes have been damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Helen.

Read Senate Bill 6007 (House Bill 6007),

” In connection with disasters certified by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that occurred after September 26, 2024 and after September 30, 2024 (“Qualified Disasters”), the requirements of this bill and It is covered by the budget. At the General Assembly, the bill requires that the owner of all real or personal property subject to taxation in this state be paid directly to the owner of this state, except intangible personal property or public interest property (“property”). (i) As determined by the property assessor by January 28, 2025, the property has been destroyed or damaged by a qualifying disaster and is located in the county included in the FEMA declaration. (ii) owned property affected during the time of a qualifying disaster. The bill requires that such payments be equal to the 2024 tax year and the total tax amount for the 30% tax. ”

The Tennessee bill unanimously passed both chambers of the state legislature.

California provides for property tax refunds to consider, but only in very cases limited situation.

Residents affected by the Palisade Fire and Eton Fire in Los Angeles County are noting that firefighters have not been deployed well in advance ahead of the expected extreme wind event on January 7th. That brush clearance was not well carried out on nearby state lands. The police did not arrive to order evacuation. And the water was not available to firefighters. This is due to the fact that the large reservoir above the Pacific Ocean was almost empty.
