Caltrans shuts down Gaviota rest areas on Highway 101 due to lack of water

Drivers traversing California’s picturesque Highway 101 this summer will need to plan ahead. Roadside stations on both sides of the highway are shutting down due to water shortages.

As of July 1st, the Gaviota rest areas, located in Santa Barbara County for northbound and southbound traffic, will close and are anticipated to remain closed until October 1st, according to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

This affected stretch of Highway 101, near the Gaviota Tunnel, is a heavily trafficked area between Buellton and Goleta. The closure means travelers will face about 55 miles without restrooms operated by the state, as noted by a local California publication.

Caltrans explained that the closure is due to inadequate water supply necessary for the facility’s operation.

The Gaviota Rest Area is one of California’s busiest spots along the coast, serving commuters, tourists, and long-distance drivers moving between Southern and Central California.

With the facilities out of service, Caltrans is urging travelers to plan in advance, seeking alternatives for fuel, food, bathroom breaks, and rest before hitting the road.

Officials indicated that the rest area will stay closed until a dependable water supply is restored, with no reopening expected before October 1st.

This issue seems linked to the local water supply rather than routine maintenance. The rest area relies on water from an inland spring that isn’t managed by Caltrans; it experienced a similar protracted closure last summer, according to local accounts.

Currently, Gaviota isn’t the only rest area facing temporary unavailability in California.

In Kern County, Caltrans has also closed the Tejon Pass rest area on Interstate 5, both directions, to perform repairs on water and wastewater facilities, a project scheduled to last until August 2027.

This situation has sparked discussion among regular drivers, many of whom claim that Gaviota’s rest stop has gained a reputation for frequent closures.

One Reddit user humorously remarked, “It’s impossible to keep Gaviota Rest Area open for more than six months!”

Some users speculate that it might not be available much longer, while one noted, “I don’t recall seeing it open except on holidays.”
