Canada Monitors Impact of Iran-Israel Tensions

OTTAWA, Canada – Following Iran’s military response against Israel, the Canadian government is keeping a watchful eye on the ongoing situation in the Middle East. The department responsible for national security has indicated that the atmosphere remains concerning.

Noemy Allard noted in a statement that local law enforcement is on high alert. Canada’s current national terrorist threat level is deemed “moderate,” which implies that violent extremist incidents could occur.

In a recent interview, Irwin Kotler, a former Canadian justice minister and a prominent human rights campaigner targeted by the Iranian regime, expressed his concerns regarding the evolving threat landscape. He has been under constant police protection since a death threat was identified earlier this year.

“Various groups, including the Iranian diaspora, human rights advocates, and journalists, are at risk,” Kotler remarked. “Now is the time for heightened vigilance.” He also mentioned troubling reports about executions in Iran related to accusations of espionage for Israel, alongside numerous arrests that followed the recent conflict.

At 85 years old, Kotler has been active in human rights law and founded the Raul Warrenberg Centre. He is advocating for the release of Ahmadrezajarali, who faces severe threats in Iran.

Kotler warned that the Iranian regime may be reviving sleeper cells in Canada, a notion that he believes merits immediate governmental action to combat external threats stemming from countries such as Iran, China, and Russia. He highlighted that Kabe Shalluz, another Canadian human rights lawyer of Iranian descent, is also under threat, and he suspects that the presence of Iranian Revolutionary Guard agents in Canada is significantly underestimated.

During a virtual press briefing at the NATO summit, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand voiced serious concerns about foreign interference, echoing Kotler’s sentiments. She pointed out that Canada declared the Iranian regime a terrorist organization in 2022 and cut diplomatic ties over a decade ago. Anand also mentioned contact with Iranian officials, reaffirming Canada’s commitment to seeking justice for the victims of the PS752 disaster in 2020.

In a recent development, the Canadian Border Services Agency has flagged 20 individuals believed to be high-ranking Iranian officials as unacceptable for entry into Canada.
